Since its conception, hip hop has been a genre heavily influenced by music of the past and personal experiences of contemporary artists. French hip hop is no exception. Today's artists have grown up with the rich history of French rap, ranging from NTM to IAM to MC Solaar. At the same time, the worldwide popularity of American hip hop artists such as Tupac, Notorious BIG, and 50 Cent have continued to shape the French rap scene. To the ignorant observer, stylistic choices and musical nods to their predecessors may make certain French artists look like they are merely "copying" their American counterparts. The beauty of today's French hip hop scene comes in the diverse origins of its rappers. The injection of personal culture into the hip hop genre allows for the emergence of new artists of various origins (Senegalese, Algerian, Comorian, etc) rapping about topics that could only arise from the context of contemporary France. Decades of immigration from former French colonies in sub-Saharan and North Africa has spawned this new generation of French rappers who reference Biggie and Pac in the same breath as l'Islam and l'Algerie. A perfect example is Rim-K's line in "Partir loin," in which he makes reference to both the revered reputation of California in the American rap game and the homeland of his ancestors, la Kabylie: "Moi, j'suis de Kabyliefornie." Cette video n'etait pas faite pour montrer que certains rappeurs "copient" d'autres, mais plutot pour montrer la richesse de l'influence multi-culturelle qui a forme le hip hop francais contemporain.

LDA is an exceptional act in the Reggaeton scene -- they look and sound unlike any other artists currently working in the world's hottest genre. For one, they are the only duo to feature both a male and a female lead vocalist, seamlessly integrating Baby Psycho's aggressive freestylin' skills with counterpart OrquÃdea Negra's smooth romantic stylings. For another, they are the only Reggaeton act that can claim to be of American origin. Though they are both of Dominican descent, the duo were raised in New York City, influenced significantly more by artists the likes of 2Pac, Nas and Busta Rhymes, as opposed to the more traditional Latin Music that currently defines the genre. But LDA have not come to define the genre -- they have come to reinvent it. LDA brings a new approach to Reggaeton, one honed on the underground of the New York club scene. Their version of Reggaeton is equal parts Latin hip-hop, east coast rap, sexy sultry vocals and even twinges of electronica. Together, the pair has achieved a sound so unique amongst their peers, it earned them honors as personal protÃ©gÃ©s to Reggaeton's most esteemed producer, Boy Wonder, who spotlighted them in his landmark Chosen Few: El Documental CD/DVD documentary -- and who already has them set to be the featured act for his highly-anticipated Chosen Few 2. The Chosen Few project was LDA's first big breakthrough, prominently featuring four of the duo's songs on the milestone CD/DVD combo and further providing them with the opportunity to remix a fifth, Don Omar's global rallying anthem, "Reggaeton Latino." It also contains their curio track, "Flossy," which -- with its blatant electronica overtones -- may be the most extraordinarily unorthodox song produced within the bounds of the Reggaeton genre. LDA's best-known song from Chosen Few, "Hoy," marked their first smash single (hitting the Top 5 on R&R's Latin Club Chart), as well as pairing them with another hot rising Reggaeton star, Cheka. LDA and Cheka would both go on to make a splash in the hugely-popular El Draft 2005 competition, conceived by esteemed genre producer Chencho -- half of famed duo, Plan B, and also alumni of the Chosen Few. According to Boy Wonder, Chencho wanted LDA's track, "Estoy En Mi Cama," for his new project so badly, "he even let me co-produce El Draft just to get it!" LDA have developed a unified philosophy for their music of open-mindedness, daring experimentalism and the incorporation of differing cultural influences -- all while still keeping Reggaeton's essence at heart -- and framed by what Psycho describes as "a New York in-your-face hip-hop attitude." LDA's success from the Chosen Few juggernaut led to hit collaborations with Reggaeton icons including N.O.R.E., Fat Joe and Zion y Lennox. And, of course, they are a featured act in Boy Wonder's highly-anticipated Chosen Few 2 project. Two of their singles have already hit the charts from Chosen Few 2.
