VERY RARE behind the scenes footage / video of Ray Luv & Young Lay circa 1993 after the filming of the Bay Area classic, ALL ABOUT MY FETTI music video. Leila Steinberg, 2Pac's first manager was filming. Ray Luv, a native of the South Park district of Santa Rosa, California came on the scene of San Francisco Bay Area rap with his 1992 single "Get Ma Money On!" off his "Who Can Be Trusted?" EP. One of the producers of the album was the Khayree. Ray Luv formed a rap group named Strictly Dope with 2Pac in the late 80s. In 1995, he released "Forever Hustlin," which put him on the map locally. Ray Luv was part of the rap scene that grew out of Vallejo, California during the 1990s. Acts such as Mac Mall, Dubee Aka Sugawolf, E-40, Mac Dre, Young Lay and others put Vallejo's rap scene on the map during the 1990s. San Francisco based radio station 106.1 FM KMEL helped these acts get (locally) famous by giving them much deserved air time. Ray Luv is also a part of the group The Link Crew. Along with better-known rappers like E-40 and 2Pac, Mac Mall was one of several who helped put the Cali Bay Area on the map in the mid- to late '90s as a hotspot in the rap game. He collaborated with many of the Bay Area's best producers -- Ant Banks, Khayree, Michael Mosley, and Rick Rock -- and helped define the scene's identity, particularly with his most successful album, Untouchable (1996), which featured perhaps his best-known song, "Get Right." His career simmered out quickly, however. He returned in 1999 after a three-year absence and few listeners seemed to notice. Mall was no longer on a major label and the Bay Area scene was no longer the hotspot it had been a few years earlier. Given his brief moment in the spotlight and his sudden decline, it was perhaps no surprise when Mall changed his style in 2001, incorporating a surprising amount of spirituality on his Immaculate album. Lathan Williams began his rapping career in Vallejo, California, and grew to take part in the bay area rap scene that grew up around radio station KMEL, and spawned such artists as E-40, Mac Dre, and the Digital Underground's Shock G and 2Pac, among many others. Young Lay released his first album in 1996, entitled "Black 'N Dangerous." One of the songs off of the sophomore album, "All About My Fetti," appeared on the soundtrack of the film New Jersy Drive, and became an instant hit. Several months before the release of his first album, "Black N' Dangerous," Williams was shot at point blank range in the head while sitting in a car. He was comatose for several days, but - remarkably - he survived. Many cited jealousy from street associates as the cause of the shooting, and the shooter was never found. Then, only a few weeks before the release of the same album, Williams' girlfriend Daphne Boyden was killed in her home, set on fire, and her child with Williams, Le-Zhan, was abducted from the scene. Witnesses said they saw two young women leaving the home with a small bundle in hand. The child was only 25 days old. Because of a series of personal tragedies and mishaps, Young Lay only recorded one more album, "Unsolved Mysteries," dedicated to his missing son Le-Zhan and the deceased mother of the child. Lathan Williams was later tried and convicted for armed robbery, and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He is currently interred at Susanville state prison. PTBTV aka Pushin' The Bay EXCLUSIVE! In this exclusive video, Emcee T aka The Chinese King of the Bay speaks with Mac Mall and J-Diggs of Thizz Entertainment; Mac Mall speaks on THIZZ Entertainment, the Bay Area rap game, the contributions made by Thizz and artists such as Mistah F.A.B. (FAB). Emcee T & Ray Luv at the Official Mac Dre day aka Mac Dre's birthday, July 5, 1970. J.Diggs, a native of Oakland/Vallejo, California Bay Area, is no stranger to the Hip-Hop frontline . His talent was first discovered and enjoyed by thousands at the young age of 15 when he set himself out among the best in the Bay to win his first competition with 106.1 KMEL Radio Station. He further claimed his rank as the best by receiving the Bay Area Music Award (BAMA) in 1986. The smooth, articulate, feisty, and confident artist is at home on stage and in front of the cameras. His charisma recently captured the audience of Black Entertainment Television (BET) which landed him an interview and one hour segment on the popular talk show OH Drama. Diggs shares his passion for the Rap Culture, and now, after doing 10 years of Federal time for conspiracy to commit bank robbery, he'ss back on the scene and ready to make it happen in a big way. Bringing more than just passion with him, Diggs pours out lyrics about being a number in the system, and what is like to be home again. Coincidentally, the release date for Diggs highly anticipated album Both Sides of the Gate, coincides with the exact date of his arrest 11 years ago. Diggs himself, was stunned by the release date , which he now claims as a Rebirth . Diggs album includes Bay Area Artists E-40, Yukmouth, Mac Dre, B-Legit, Mac Mall, PSD, Suga-T, Lenny Williams, and more. Diggs can also be heard on compilation; The Rompilation 3, Mac Dre's, Mac Dammit Man and Mac Malls newly released Mac n Speaks Louder than Words. While Diggs hold his own, and has an undisputable style, he has often been compared to the likes of Scarface and DMX. Diggs is definitely a new Bay Area artist to keep your eyes on! Mac Mall released his debut album in 1993 called Illegal Business? at the age of 16. It featured Mac Dre and Ray Luv on Young Black Brotha Records. He returned in 1996 with Untouchable. Illegal Business? 2000 in 1999 and the Rap and R'n'B compilation CD Mac Mall presents the Mallennium. Featured were Ray Luv, Mopreme, Yukmouth, Regime, JT The Bigga Figga and others. In 2001 Mac Mall released Immaculate, which featured Fatal, Shock G. In 2002 Mac Mall released Mackin Speaks Louder Than Words. It featured Big Syke, Mac Dre, Sleep Dank, J-Diggs. Thizz Entertainment is a San Francisco Bay Area-based, independent record label, started as Romp Records in 1996 by rapper Mac Dre. When Dre moved to Sacramento in 1999, he changed the label's name to Thizz Entertainment to avoid connections to the Romper Room Gang, his former partners in crime. Dre thought the name Thizz perfectly expressed how it felt when you were high on Ecstasy which was becoming popular in the Bay Area hip hop scene. When, on November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot and killed after a performance in Kansas City, Missouri Dre's business partners Miami tha Most and Curtis "Kilo Curt" Nelson took over the label, and added Mac Mall as co-owner. The label's base of operations was then moved back to the Bay Area. PUSHIN' THE BAY TV IS LOOKING FOR A THEME SONG!!! THINK YOU GOT WHAT IT TAKES? SEND YOUR SONG TO SONG@PUSHINTHEBAY.COM PUSHIN' THE BAY TV (PTBTV) is the most informative, up to date, and entertaining resource for classic Bay Area hip-hop. Founded by artist/entrepreneur Emcee T in 2006 PTBTV has consistently delivered thought provoking and retrospective interviews with veteran Bay Area artists, as well as rare insight to and behind the scene footage of legends such as Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. T embarked on his journey to PUSH THE BAY upon realizing the importance of creating opportunities for fellow independent artists. This idea to PUSH THE BAY manifested into a concert series/artist showcase called PUSHIN' THE BAY as well as PTBTV. Co-host and veteran Bay Area MC Ray Luv lends his experience and position in the formative stages of the Bay Area rap scene to PTBTV. Unlike other shows PTBTV features a host who draws from direct experience in relation to the shows mission as well as with its interview subjects. Ironically it was Luvs work that brought T into the world of hip-hop. Their collaboration has brought balance to the objective of PTBTV, showcasing the contributions and innovations made by Bay Area rap pioneers. As Luv serves as a representative of PTBTV to the music industry, T provides the shows technical savviness. It took two minds to get this vision moving full force. Him a 90s Bay Area rapper from my hometown and me a Chinese-American in love with Bay Area rap music from the 90s said T. Together these two will push the Bay to unprecedented heights.
