4-20-1986: The 1985/86 Boston Celtics have been regarded as one of the greatest NBA teams of all time. With a home record of 40-1 that season (only losing to the Portland Trailblazers) Boston was the clear favorite to roll through all competetion and earn top spot as the 1986 NBA Finals Champions. 1st round action paired the eventual champions up with the Chicago Bulls lead by a 23 year old 2nd year Michael Jordan comming off an 18 game season due to a broken bone in his foot. In game 1 Jordan put on a spectacular show dropping 49 points on the star studded line-up of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge 6th Man Of The Year Bill Walton, and former All Star Scott Wedmen. Jordans refusal to lay down was not enough as Boston took game 1 123-104. Game 2 was a completely different story. Noone expected to see the highest single player scoring record for a playoff game come against the 67-15 Celtics and definately noone expected to see it come with Boston playing as the home team. Boston did eventually go on to win the game but Jordan was more determined this time around after getting to see what Boston was capable of. Jordan dropped 54 on the Celtics in regulation and hit 2 free throws with no time on the clock to send the game into overtime. An eventual 2nd overtime came when Larry Bird missed a 3 at the buzzer. Boston proved to be too much for the young Jordan with minimal help in the 2nd overtime though as Boston overcame the Bulls 135-131. In game 3 Boston knew they couldnt let Jordan have even the slightest margin of open shots. Boston focused on defending Jordan and left the game up to the rest of the team. Forcing Jordan to change his game up may have been the start of the Jordan legacy as Michael handled the adjustment well dropping his points to 19 for the game also dishing out 9 assists and grabbing 10 rebounds. The eventual outcome of the series was a sweep for the Boston Celtics who eventually did go on to win the Finals after a 6 game series with the Houston Rockets. In this video I have put all 63 of Michael Jordans points (including all free throws) and a block and steal by the young athlete from game 2. Also there is an overlooked shot by Kevin Mchale while sitting on top of a Bulls player, this shot rarely gets played due to the fact this game was Jordans night. The music in the video is from Run DMCs "Raising Hell" and Beastie Boys "License To Ill" albums. I chose these albums because they are in my opinion two of the greatest rap/hip hop albums of all time and they were both released in 86, the same years as Jordans 63 point explosion!
