La mayoría de los negros se mezclaron con mestizos (no con indígenas puros, al menos no en una cantidad considerable) y sus rasgos africanos se asimilaron con la población local. Hoy en día muchos mexicanos (mestizos) aun poseen rasgos notablemente africanos. Existen algunas comunidades de mexicanos de ascendencia africana en su mayoría. Para 1990, había alrededor de 450 000 mexicanos de ascendencia negra. La mayoría de estos afromexicanos no se identifican con los demás negros de Latinoamérica o los Estados Unidos. La causa mayor podría ser la ignorancia, ya que en muchos casos, estos afrodescendientes no están tan cercanos a los medios de información como en otros países.
